Mendocino Kids Fire Smart

Classroom Lesson

It’s time to get Fire Smart! With grant funding from California Fire Foundation, Conservation works created wildfire resilience education for Mendocino County K-8 Students!

Our goal was to give students the necessary framework to understand wildfire and what it means to be resilient in the face of it. We talked about the causes of wildfire, how climate change plays a role, and mitigation efforts through an interactive BINGO game. It created an open space to talk about fire, our fears, and how we can join our community in keeping each other safe.

We also held a workshop, Beyond the Burn: Grazing for Fire Smart Lands, that highlighted grazing as a tool for for wildfire resilience. Attendees joined us in a short walk around some of the 5300 acres at Hopland Research and Extension Center (HREC) to get an up-close look at grazing animals in action. Our tour was led by grazing expert Sarah Keiser and HREC Shepherd Alison Smith, who showed us all just how useful grazing is when it comes to wildfire!

The curriculum for this lesson has been adapted from and inspired by Mendocino Fire Safe Council “Fire Science” lessons.

Conservation Works has been awarded a special grant from the California Fire Foundation for preventing, preparing and/or responding to major events, including wildfires and other disasters. The foundation has teamed up with funding partners across the state to help local fire departments, firefighter associations, fire safe councils and other community-based organizations through individual grants worth up to $15,000. Funding aids grantees in helping their communities address issues that threaten millions of Californians each year. More information is available at cafirefoundation.org
